Ingredients

2 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for the filling)

1 pre-made pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Coarse sugar (for sprinkling)

Optional: Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking, and set it aside.

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples with the lemon juice. This helps to prevent browning. To the apples, add the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and all-purpose flour. Gently toss the mixture with a spoon or your hands until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for approximately 10 minutes; this allows the flavors to blend beautifully.

Roll Out the Pie Crust: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie crust into a rustic circle, approximately 12 inches in diameter. The edges do not need to be perfectly uniform—embrace the rustic charm!

Assemble the Galette: Carefully transfer the rolled-out crust onto the prepared baking sheet. Spoon the apple filling into the center of the crust, leaving around a 2-inch border all around the edges. Gently fold the edges of the crust over the filling, creating pleats as you go, which will encase part of the apples while leaving some exposed.

Egg Wash: Use a pastry brush to apply the beaten egg over the folded edges of the crust. This will give your galette a stunning golden brown finish once baked. To add an extra touch of sweetness and crunch, sprinkle coarse sugar over the crust.

Bake: Place the galette in the preheated oven and bake for about 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender. Keep a close watch during the final minutes of baking to avoid over-browning.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the galette from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a delightful contrast.
